Christmas Eve Observance
Gather at Market Square and the Courthouse on Duke of Gloucester Street for the annual Christmas Eve events.
The firing of the Christmas guns will be at 5 p.m. at Market Square. During the 18th century, it was customary to fire guns in salute to the Christmas season as an expression of joy and celebration.
See the Williamsburg tree illumination and hear the traditional retelling of the city’s first Christmas tree at 5:30 p.m. on the Courthouse steps.
These events are free to the public.

December 2011 Festive Illuminations
Illuminations were commonly used in the 18th century to celebrate special events. Families are invited to enjoy Colonial Williamsburg’s festive illuminations in the Historic Area. Illuminations will be held at the Palace Green, at the Capitol, at Market Square and at the Taverns at 5:30 p.m. on certain days in December. These events are free to the public.
