Happy Birthday, Dr. Goodwin!
Today is the birthday of the Reverend Dr. W. A. R. Goodwin, rector of Bruton Parish Church, and “father” of Colonial Williamsburg. William Archer Rutherfoord Goodwin was born in Richmond, Va., June 18, 1869, the son of wounded officer John Francis Goodwin, Confederate States of America, (ret.), and Letitia Rutherfoord.
In 1926, Dr. Goodwin shared with philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. a dream of rescuing Williamsburg’s historic buildings, and in 1927 the city’s restoration began. The two saw the preservation of Virginia’s 18th-century capital as an opportunity to ensure the ideals of the patriots who helped create the American republican system live for future generations. Dr. Goodwin died September 7, 1939.
Listen to him narrate the story of Williamsburg’s restoration.
